ACORD developed a comprehensive HIV/AIDS project to be funded jointly by Ereto II and OXFAM. Limited lessons available from elsewhere, on how to respond to HIV/AIDS amongst pastoralist communities, meant the project had to be innovative. The goal of the project: Building community competence to respond to HIV/AIDS and its impacts in Ngorongoro District.' The project used a rights based approach, meaning that community members have the right to have control over and decide freely on matters related to their sexuality, free of coercion, discrimination or violence. The project promoted this right at community level and district/national levels, developing intervention strategies around rights. The document is a project document, and has been included on this web-site as it is the first HIV/AIDS intervention designed to specifically target pastoralist communities in a District wide project.
